Rip Currents: Know Your Options

Jase Bernhardt, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability at Hofstra University where he researches improved weather hazard communication using tools such as virtual reality and video games. He has appeared in local and national media including The Washington Post, Newsday, and The Weather Channel to discuss weather warning communication.

Rip currents are among the leading dangers that beachgoers face, yet many do not have a full understanding of them. This lecture will provide details about how rip currents form, their impacts, and how to mitigate risk. Dr. Bernhardt will also discuss research using video game simulations to improve rip current communication.
